Michigan Centennial (775) - Is This Really a Crosby?
Planty attributes this cachet to Crosby. While that may be true, I have some doubts. Yes it is sometimes seen addressed to Crosby, but Crosby often serviced covers that were prepared by other cachetmakers. For instance, there are a number of Dyer and other cachets for the 773 Cal Expo Issue that are addressed to Crosby, some even with his little type-written label. However, no one would claim that just because Dyer's cachet has a Crosby label that it is now actually a Crosby cachet. What troubles me about this cover is that up to this point, Crosby was primarily creating cachets only for issues locally available to him such as the 1932 Olympics and the Cal Expo Issue. And it was not until a year later, with the Susan B. Anthony issue that he would begin to create covers regularly for U.S. stamp issues released throughout the country. Why then would he pick this issue to create a cachet for? Also, while it has raised print, it does not seem to be the same raised print feeling that one gets when examining the Cal Expo issues. And the envelope itself is completely different from the envelopes Crosby used to service his Cal Expo covers and the later issues. (It is however, similar to the envelope used by Crosby on the 6c Garfield issue.) Stroebel makes no mention of this issue in his book either. While this cover may certainly be a Crosby cover, I would like to see some more definite information about it clearly establishing that it was designed by Crosby. For example, is there any advertising for this cover by Crosby? It is also curious that despite the fact that this cover is much less often seen that the Susan B. Anthony covers, when it is sold, it generally fetches much less. Is that because others also are not certain that it is a Crosby cover?
If anyone has information about this cover that would help to indicate that it either is or is not truly a Crosby cover, I would be very interested in hearing from you.
